| Hope calipers rubbing my spokes! -HELP | PAUL Apr 4, 2002 11:51 AM | | I am just building up my bike here is the problem.
I am running hope C2 discs on a SID SL(2001), the wheels are DT Onyx discs(laced to 317s). Now the inner part of the caliper is rubbing the outer spokes. However, The disc is perfectly aligned inside the caliper. Is there something about these DTs (ie flange width) that will not allow me to run this current set up, or is there something i can do to remedy this situation?
Thanks

| Had same problem | El Jester Apr 4, 2002 12:26 PM | | I was using the XC4 models but I had the same problem. Called Hope and they told me some of their brakes are not compatible with any other hubs but Hope and to file off some of the caliper to use it with my XT hub!! I was afraid to take off too much, so I ground the bottom edge off at an angle and then dished my rim a little to prevent the rest of the rub. It worked fine after that.
Good Luck!! |
| how much is too much to file off? | PAUL Apr 4, 2002 6:41 PM | | how much did you file off? I am worried about shaving off too much of the caliper. any more information would be greatly appreciated. When cornering did the wheels rub as they spokes flexed? |
| Be very careful.... | SS_MB-7 Apr 5, 2002 5:36 AM | | I lent my old set of C2s to a riding buddy who was using Formula disc hubs. The front C2 caliper hit the spokes and we tried to file the back of the caliper to provide clearance. He filed enough to just clear the spokes, but when he applied the brakes, the rear of the caliper split-open! Try using thin spacers on the hub to move the rotor out. Tyically, you need spacers on the fork leg to move the caliper towards the rotor on the hub. So, why not take those caliper spacers and use them on the rotor. Effectively, it does the same thing (aligns the caliper with the rotor) but now allows more spoke clearance. I wish we had tried that first instead of filing. Ride Hard, Mike B. |
| That was an expensive error..... | KMan Apr 5, 2002 8:17 AM | | would like to have seen your faces after that happened....bet you were kind of looking at each other like......What the!

| Not too bad - just bought a caliper half (nm) | SS_MB-7 Apr 5, 2002 8:34 AM | | |
| my Formula Evo's rubbed with X317-Kings, so here... | IAmtnbikr Apr 5, 2002 6:27 PM | | is what I did. I filed the caliper body to allow clearance, but it was plenty thick. You could also machine the caliper mount bosses to move the caliper out farther, if it uses no shims that can be removed already. Not real hard to do with access to a mill, or if you are very careful, even a file by hand, but it must be done squarely! Then, use a spacer for the rotor. |
| how much is too much to file off? | PAUL Apr 4, 2002 8:07 PM | | How much did you file off. I am worried that I will expose the piston or other internals. Did you have any rubbing when cornering?(from wheel flex). Thanks

| how much is too much to file off? | El Jester Apr 5, 2002 6:08 AM | | On the XC4 there was alot of extra material to work with but I just filed off the sharp corner and (maybe less than 1/8"). The dishing took care of the rest. After all of that if never rubbed again.
The the other poster said, make sure your caliper is mounted to the fork WITH OUT any spacers. If you need to align the rotor and caliper it is best (with the Hopes anyway) to space the rotor out.
HOPE it works! :) (this is why i just switched to Hayes) |
