Any thoughts? I am down to these two.

Thanks.

....decisions, decisions, descision! And whatever way you go you can't make a bad one. I've used them both for fair amounts of time and they are both fine brakes.

It boils down, as I see it, to whether you want cables or hydraulics.

They are both manually adjustable brakes so no gain there for either one unless you hate to have to use a 5mm wrench for the Louise. Both easy to set up - one with shims and one with its CPS system.

They both have the wonderfully simple and efficient "flexing rotor" method of inner pad application.

The Louise will be somewhat lighter but I don't know by how much. Both adequate power with maybe a slight advantage going to the Avid but is the playing field equalled by Louise's better modulation which is as smooth as buttah?

I'll take the Louise lever any day over (if you use it) the Avid SD7. Anyday.

Let us know which way you went!

Mike T. (mcm # 717)

PS - be careful of opinions of those who have not tested both as opinions are like arseholes - we all have them and some of them stink ;o)

Here's a link to something I posted the other day for someone else. It was in response to a slightly different question but it's stil pretty much in tune with what you want to know. Not quite the same brands but the concerns are the same. Hope this helps...

I also rode for a VERY short time with Magura Julie's. This is a two piston system. The performance of these was just great, on par in the dry (only tested for two trips to work) with the Deore hydros.

I'm not sure if you looked at them or have some reason for prefering the two you've selected but a vote for the Julie's is a vote for effective braking....

Have you looked at the 2002 Louise? Cambria Bikes has them for $99 a set. I wouldn't order them without checking whether they are OEM or not. If they are OEM, they might not have all the parts. But, for $99 (the price of a 2001 Louise master cylinder), it's hard (not impossible) to go wrong.

... I see from the site that the new Louise are the same as the old Julie calipers. Cambria has either for the same $99. Note that the master cylinders are different so you can pick the old Julie (my fav, I like the hose running out closer to the bars) or the new Louise that looks like it works better with twist shifters.

You could do a lot worse than these at that price...
not quite the same.......heff®

...the Julie is a low pressure system, uses the same hoses as the HS series rim brakes. Louise is a high-pressure system, with totally different piston diameters.

Similarities are superficial only.

The Louise is a MUCH more powerful brake than the Julie.

... I didn't look into it far enough and I'm not a Cult member so I'm not that up on these.

I was impressed with the Julie. I can't imagine how the Louise could be that much better. I was doing 1 finger panic stops with the Julie's. What do you do with the Louise then, use 1/2 a finger?

You must be smaller than me. The Julies are good, just not as powerful. Man, I got my Avids back from Mike T, went for a ride, and almost put myself over the bars in the parking lot at jdcamb's house. WAY more power. The Louise is similar.

the $99 is for each brake unit not the pair. Add it to your cart and see. Another interesting note: the description for the brake implies that it's a 02' model but the shopping cart says '01.

I just went through a similar decision (Avid vs. Louise) process and decided on the Avids. I can give no clear reason why. Total whim - coin flip. If I don't like the Avids, 02' Louise may be next.
