Squealing Avid Mech. disc brake after cleaning ...mike-n-bike

I've had my front disc brake on for about 6 months now without any problems. Tonight I take the wheel out to change a flat tire and figure I'll clean the rotors and pads with isopropyl alcohol while I'm at it. Doing what I always have done in the past to clean them, I put the wheel in the fork and do a test run in the parking lot. WOW! Wake up the neighbors! That thing honks so fricking loud, I need ear plugs.

I checked all bolts, recleaned everything twice, re-inserted pads a few times, reinstalled wheel several times, all to no avail. I adjusted pads and made sure rotor was true. If I just start putting the brake on, it honks. It honks with the wheel rolling forward or backward with the same brake pressure. It honks the entire way around the rotor, not just one spot. The sound is like a horribly tuned violin.

Anybody know what the heck is going on here?
here's a few things I would try.........heff®

1: Make sure your mounting tabs are free of paint. File the dropouts clean, if you need to.

2: Reverse the skewer, putting the lever on the opposite side of the fork from the caliper.

3: Tighten the skewer a bit more.

You have to have a solid connection from the wheel to the caliper, any loose paint will affect that.

HOOOOOOOWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNK.

IIIR.

I call it my horn, cause it lets people know.

Its like a frequency thing isnt it. I get mine at a weak pull, pull harder and it goes away, lighter and it just scrapes through the pads. Its like it bellows.

I dont have an answer.

I think there is no cure without power loss.
Larry, read my post , above yours.heff®

There ARE solutions. None of my disk brakes have ever squealed, and when they do, I fix it.

File the paint off your mounting tabs, check your QR tightness, and make sure your caliper is exactly aligned.

If you have a Marzocchi fork, fill the hollow section at the bottom of the lowers with insulating foam.

If you have a SID, get another fork.

Check your pads for glazing. Either fine grit sandpaper will get rid of it, or, in a pinch, rubbing them in a circular motion on a cement step will do. Rough the pads up.
