| Deore hydro or hayes/avid mech? | chompers Apr 5, 2002 5:36 AM | | I live in australia and ride downhill.I'm only 16 so i dont have to much cash and only have a 5 inch front and rear freeride bike but its got some alright parts and a chainguide so it goes alright for downhill. But i'm only running deore v's and avid sd7 levers at the moment and they work ok.But i was looking for a disc brake and hayes cost 650 a side here now i've been told and that is just to much. I was looking at getting the deore hydro for half the price and was wondering if it was worth it or if a hayes or avid mechanical would be better.I've heard bad things about mechanical discs for downhill that they are nothing but trouble but then again i'm only running v's but they are relatively trouble free so i dunno.PLease give me your opinion |

| re: Deore hydro or hayes/avid mech? | Mister W Apr 5, 2002 9:50 PM | | My guess, go with the deore...
I have hayes mech, and they're not good.
You are better with hydros and when shimano bring something new, they tested it before for sure. |
| Yeah, you're right... | næstep Apr 6, 2002 6:01 AM | | ...just like first year Deore mechanical discs, first generation "pushbutton" Rapid Fire, 858 pedals and BioPace chainrings. Don't fall into that trap; Shimano had some bonehead products, too.
My vote with the Avid: They're proven (just read through the reviews section), the aftermarket support rocks, care & feeding is downright simple, and they've been getting my bloated carcass down hills now for two years.
Nothing against the Deore Hydro's, but they're a new guy on a crowded block. The Deore's may require some digging around for some information of substance, or else take the bite and put on the ol' guinea pig hat.

| I've got the HMX too and .... | BCRider Apr 7, 2002 12:05 AM | | ... I find them to be excellent brakes. BUT the parts that made them excellent is the Avid Speedial levers that came with the bike. Brakes are a system and like any system a single weak part can ruin the results. In the case of the HMX I agree that with standard spec V brake levers they are not the most effective. But with a quick adjustment on the Speedials I turned my SYSTEM into an easy one finger stopper. |
