Larger Avid Mech. Disc Rotors(2 posts)

Larger Avid Mech. Disc Rotorsbrowncow36

This morning I saw that jensonusa.com sells avid mechanical disc brakes in larger rotor diameters. I have the standard 160mm. If I upgrade to the 203mm rotors will get improved braking performance? Where can I buy just these 203mm rotors?? Also, what adapters if any will I need on my current calipers??? Thanks in advance for any help!

I just bought a couple 185mm rotors for the front brakes on a couple of my bikes. My LBS was asking $45 for each rotor and $10 for each adapter. Avid makes different adapters for each rotor size.

I don't know of any specific mail order houses selling just the rotors and adapters but I'm sure there must be many that do.

"Improved" is a subjective term. With a larger rotor the brake will be more powerful but if you like slow, technical trails the increased grabbiness the larger rotor will cause might just be a disadvantage. (As rotor diameter increases so does power, but modulation decreases.) If you're doing extended, steep downhills the larger rotors are definitely the way to go.
