| V-Brake advice: Avid SD-7 vs SD Mags..... | AC Jul 14, 2002 1:40 PM | | For XC application
Right now prices are the same on these.
I realize Mags are lighter.
Mags are out of production, just wondering if
there were any performance issues of not being
as stiff - I'm aware of the manufacturing issue,
otherwise with lightness and same price, thinking
Mags are the way to go.
thanks for any comments or experiences. |
| Mags, but the only other difference... | næstep Jul 14, 2002 4:34 PM | | ...is the pads. The Mags came with original Rim Wrangler cartridge pads, which used the straight inserts. The SD7s come with the RW2 pads that use the common curved inserts.
Honestly, I don't know if it's difficult to find the straight inserts anymore -- I've seen a couple posts of guys complaining about this, but it could just be their local shop. Maybe worth checking out?
I've got a set of Avid Mag levers that must be three years old now. They're great, but functionally no different than the SD5s I use on my second bike, or the SD7s on my wife's bike.
So for even money, I'd say go with the Mags if you've checked out the pad issue, or go with the SD7s for equal perfomance and a negligable weight increase. (Pretty hard to pass up that chi-chi factor, huh?) |
| These mags come with WR2's...... | AC Jul 14, 2002 6:17 PM | | at Supergo...

but this SD-7 brake/lever combo is pretty hard to pass up also....
http://www.supergo.com/itemdisplay.asp?compflag=0&parentid=15050&company=Avid&secid=7559&subid=1803
although I don't currently need the levers, for the price
they're almost free. It's not clear with the SD-7s whether
they come with the WR2's.
Since I already have WR cartridges (from my old Avid 20s),
I think which ever model I get, I'll try to get the WR2's
so I have full versatility.
thanks for the info. |
| Those are definitely WR2s in the SD7 photo... | næstep Jul 15, 2002 6:20 AM | | ...but I'm not sure if they've always come with them. But I doubt SuperGo has much in the way of old stock sitting around based on the prices they sell these things for.
I'm a huge fan of the Speed Dial levers. I'd suggest choosing based on how much you like your current lever set. My money is with the SD7s just for the spare parts but if you're a weight weenie, the Mags are the way to go. Performance wise, they're equals.
Don't ya hate these kinds of choices?

| I went with the SD-7s....... | AC Jul 15, 2002 8:29 AM | | The wt reduction of the mags was tempting,
but the levers seemed like a good bonus.
One aspect will be interesting: color.
Avid says they only come in nickle and bronze, but
Supergo claims (and I wrote them for verification)
that the brake arms (not levers) are Anodized gray.
I picked up a spare XT rear der for $38 at the same time.
catch ya later. |
