Upgrading to discs, beginner question.(8 posts)

Upgrading to discs, beginner question.JoshNYC

I built a bike about 2 years ago. Mountian Cycle san andreas frame and have been using Magura tomacs. I am thinking about switching over to a disc setup but I am a bit confused. Can I buy any disc hub and use it with any disc brake system? Does the wheel need to be built to a certain spec so it lines up with the frame and the discs? What do I need to look for in order to get a setup that fits properly?

Any help would be great!
Thanks!
Josh

disc hubs are almost all universally Hayes 6 bolt STANDARD. End of problems there, rotors bolt right one with dab of loctite. Most all brakesets conform to this standard.

Now it gets muddier...

IMHO, best check your front fork and make certain what type of disc tabs are on it. They will be Hayes post mount, or IS-A standard.

If you want cable discs, you don't need new levers. If you want Hydros, you need new levers, if your setup is integrated lever-shifter, you need new shifter pods.

Some mail order houses have packages: wheelsets with disc hubs, and further disounts if you get brakes to, but you gotta know what tabs are on your fork, and your chainstay at the rear.

As always, Magura covers it all with pix here: http://www.magura.de/english/bremsen/standard.htm

good luck, Jim MCM #11

Similar question. I know my bike has NO disc tabs, am I SOL or is there someone out there that makes brackets to mount the calipers to for old school frames. I really like my frame and don't want to change it.
