Shimano mechanical disks?Brian L

Some of the new 2003 FR bikes I've been looking (Kona Stuff, Rocky Mtn Grind) come with Shimano Mechanical disks (one gives model number 475). Does anyone know if these brakes are any good?

I played with and rode a set just yesterday.

Uhh... I hope Avid really does have something going into production to counter these things real soon...

Not the brute !!STOP!! of Avid, but super smooth and tuned maybe similar 'stop' potential as Avid. And seriously lightweight. Add in the fact that the price on the box was about $55, well, You work it out. I think my Hayes might have to seek out a new home as soon as I can swing for a set (and a disk hub or two for the girlfriends bike, the aforementioned home!)

BTW Deore 03 uses octalink and the 03 XT cranks are nothing short of beautiful. Nice fat (STIFF!!!) cranks with pretty rings. All use the same BB.

All that stuff came into my LBS yesterday, and that LBS is only 100km from the Shimano factory in Osaka so you can geuss how new the stuff is. :)))))

If it's '03 Deore, give it very serious thought. If it's old stock, don't bother.

Thanks, the reviews on mtbreview were all over the map (and it sounds like they've improved for '03 anyway)
