Emergency Shimano disc installation question or two......(5 posts)

Emergency Shimano disc installation question or two......Bud
Nov 13, 2002 3:28 PM
I'm installing a XTR group for a demo Moots at our shop. I've worked a lot with Magura hydraulic brakes but never Shimano. The instructions with the disc brakes have absolutely no info on how to shorten the hose (line). With Maggies I just cut the line, put a new compression ring on and I'm good to go. Surely the big "S" realizes that they ship the rear line way too long and it will need to be cut?!?! My second question is can I use pharmaceutical mineral oil or Magura mineral oil in these brakes or must I order their (Shimano's) brand before I can complete the installation?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

I have never installed or even seen in person XTR discs (would love to have a set though), so I can't answer your question about cutting the lines, but I do have XT discs and can answer the fluid question. I would recommend Magura or Shimano fluid as pharmaceutical mineral oil may be a different viscosity. I tried it once and while it worked fine when it was warm out, it was awful when cold. Hope that helps.

Check this link. It is a blown up diagram of the Shimano brake, and it shows the parts used to attach the line.

Hey man, I appreciate that -- I missed it somehow on their website. I talked to a Shimano rep today who gave me completely incorrect information. This will help a lot.

I found that on the Shimano Europe website, they generally have more tech stuff over there than on the US site.
