| Lookin for New Discs, what would you get ... | 64SpokenNips Nov 13, 2002 4:55 PM | | if you were in the market for new disc brakes. I am on my second pair of Hope Minis and these scream worst than the first set. Yes, ive done everything in attempt to shut them up, so I'm selling them and I'm either going to get Hayes or Avids, I like hydros, but Ive heard Avid mechs are pretty good. Any suggestions and experiances would be great. I do an occasional downhill or two, but mostly XC ridding, so they have to be able to take some heat. |

| using Avids for my current buildup | Duckman Nov 13, 2002 9:13 PM | | have hayes hyd on my current ride and love them. figure if avids are now considered by many as equal in performance, as well as being lighter, easier to setup and maintain(altho my hayes have required zero maint sort of replacing the pads recently for some koolstop reds), and half the cost, that it only makes sense to give'm a try on the new ride. i replaced the rotorbolts and caliper frame mt bolts for ti replacements. my 2 cents.

| None of the above... | Schtoo Nov 15, 2002 3:07 AM | | If I were in the market for new mechanical disk brakes I'd seriously look at the '03 Deore mechanicals.
First thing I noticed was weight. The caliper, disk, adapters and mounting hardware 'felt' lighter than my Hayes caliper. This is purely my judgment, but I often judge weight pretty well (within 20-30gms when cooking). Either way, they just felt really light while still in the box.
Second thing was the price. Y7500, or about US$55 depending on the day. Cheap in anyones language (or currency).
Thirdly was riding a full '03 Deore bike with these disks on it. If these were out when I got my Hayes (I got them at $99 F/R), I'd have bought them. Super smooth, lots of 'stop' and from the looks of then easy to set up too (Bike mech said about the same setup time as Avid, maybe a little longer but not much).
I'm not spouting that Shimano is the greatest thing out there, but they have done some things REALLY right for this year. These brakes are just one example.
If you don't like the Deore, go with Avid. My Hayes are alright (and great in the wet) but they aren't wonderful. I also have heat-stained disks, so they have been hot. Worthwhile mentioning for your expected riding conditions.
P.S. I don't know if your LBS will have these brakes yet. They arrived at mine on Wed, and we are only a 2 hour drive from the factory. |
| well, as a matter of fact | Duckman Nov 15, 2002 2:26 PM | | (altho it sounds like the ones your describing maybe even newer than what i'm talking of)i recently installed whats supposed to be the newer improved 03 "short throw" deore mech disc brakes on the front of my default loaner/rails to trails/spare bike being a Moab 2. bought at a bargain price of $50. they actually work pretty darn good to my pleasant surprise. hasn't been on any epic rides or anything, but the tunability, progressive feel, and power are waaaaaay better then any rim brake out there. even my buds xtr's used w/ the bondrager ceramics. it looks abit bulkier then the new generation avids maybe. the rotor looks alot more "stamped" then the avids or hayes. still think they are a deal tho. |
| If you go... | Roy Nov 15, 2002 9:01 AM | | mechanical, definately the Avids. The Deore's may work well as mentioned but with the Avids:
- adjustability will be better as Shimano doesn't use the CPS
- you can go to different rotor sizes (160/185/203) easily
- Avid support will beat on the best support you could ever hope to get from Shimano
- much better resale value if you decide to switch
If you go hydro there are lots of good options. Peruse thru the board posts over the past few months:
- Magura
- Formula
- Hayes
- Grimeca
- Shimano XT
All have excellent offerings. |
