XT squeal(4 posts)

XT squealDai

Is there any way of stopping the massively irritataing squeal on my front v-brake, bearing in mind that the brakes supposedly don't need toeing in?

I read that using a cable tie somewhere helps prevent it.
Would changing my break pads to a softer compound actually help (currently I'm using the pads that came with the bike)?

Bearing in mind that I ride in wet, muddy Britain, what pads are best?
softer pads squeeled more for mederby

With XTR (XT is very simmilar) only ceramic pads didn't squeel for me with regular rims or ceramic rims. Although they still squeeled some in the wet. The softer and higher in performance the pad, the more easily they built up rubber on the rims and squeeled.

Avid or any non-parralel brake arms didn't squeel at all for me (different vibration harmonic), but weren't as powerful as XTR V's using the same pads.

Good luck, each squeel problem is unique to the rider/fork/frame combination.

XT v brakes are notorious for squealing. Try using a brake arch. This worked on two of my friends bikes that had XT's on them. We had tried everything else including different pads. Nothing worked except the arch.

The first thing I do with the stock xt pads is take them off and throw them away. Then I get a set of Kool stop pads. These worked great for me.I've had to do this on all of the bikes that I own. They work in wet conditions also (all-weather pads). Good luck!
