| Sqeal like a stuck pig | Wade Nov 14, 2002 12:46 PM | | Seems like end up posting this about 3 times a year... My Avids scream like a muther...., well, lets just say they're noisy. On regular trail riding or long, fast, descents they're quiet as can be. However, when I'm on a trail where its very steep and slow going where I really have them squeezed either continuously or close to it for a period of several minutes, they eventually start to scream. And I mean fingernails-on-a-chalkboard-see-the-trees-actually-cringe-small-forest-creatures-crapping-themselves squalling. If I stop and let them cool or when I get into trail where I'm just using them occasionally, they quiet down nicely. Over the course of the last year and a half I've tried different forks, 4 sets of pads including original Avids (APC?), Avid UPC's and EBC Golds (same as UPC?), sanding the pads to break the glaze, adjusting the inner pad as close as possible, and cleaning the rotor with alcohol. I've never tried boiling/baking the pads, but I have tried brand new pads coupled with a freshly alcoholed rotor - no luck. There's no power problem - they've always been very strong, even when hot. The noise usually begins with the back brake, but its definitely a problem with both front and back. One thing I can think of that I've never tried is non-sintered pads, but the consensus seems to be that sintered have more power and last longer, so I've been reluctant to try anything else. My riding buddy has deore hydraulics, he rarely even gets a chirp out of his brakes, and he's using Kool-Stop pads so I'm thinking about trying some. Anyway, I'm ready to try some new ideas if anyone has some to share. Wade |
| Bigger rotors, less heat buildup... | Brandon Nov 14, 2002 11:16 PM | | Better Cooling..
If you're overheating your rotors you should be using larger rotors. |
