Brake pad squeal...(3 posts)

Brake pad squeal...superlamequestionman

Here's a question that i'm sure has been answered a million times... How do I stop my front brake from squealing like a mo'fo?
They're some of those funky 70's centerpull calipers (similar to modern U-brakes) that are found on older road bikes (this one's a fixie convert)

thankyoumuch.

...Try cleaning your rim sidewalls with a scotch-brite pad and take some medium emery cloth to the face of your brake pads.

It might also help to remove your brake calipers from the brake posts, clean the posts and the openings in the calipers. Grease the posts before you reassemble. Lots of times the squeeling isn't caused by the actual contact of the pad on the rim but by a vibration at another part of the mechanism.

Bottom line is to clean and grease the sh!t outta them.

I just addressed this a few weeks ago on my own ride. When I did a search here, it all led to Toeing in the front of the brake pad. It worked! I followed the instructions in the Park Tool website.
