| hayes issues | theplut Nov 15, 2002 7:30 AM | | Hi folks,
My new Specialized Enduro came with Hayes brakes on them, something my dealer hasn't spent a lot of time with. I have a question and an issue.
First, are there different models of Hayes? There are no markings or part numbers for me to figure that out, at least none that I see (i.e. Shimano writes Deore, LX, etc... all over their stuff. On Hayes, nothing..).
Secondly, my rear brake is very "squishy". On the first pull it comes almost to the bar, but on the next pull it firms up, like it's building pressure. We got a bleed kit and help from a friend that has and loves Hayes and bled the every loving crap out of the brakes. Hasn't seemed to help much (and that bleeding process is completely back-asswards if you ask me...).
Dealer is going to call Hayes tech support today. I've downloaded the specs from the Hayes webpage, but has anyone had a similar problem and how did you fix it?
Thanks for any tips!

| re: hayes issues | RMERREN Nov 15, 2002 9:06 AM | | There is an adjustment for lever pull that may fix the problem. It is a small allen screw located between the bar grip and the lever near the pivit point. The best thing to do is get familiar with the brake system the hard way, SOHK. They are great brakes and mostly trouble free, but most bike dealers are not familiar with them yet. Good luck RM |
| Throw the hayes bleed bottle in the trash and get a big syringe- | Mountain Cycle Shawn Nov 15, 2002 6:58 PM | | and push a bunch of fluid through to get the trapped air out. I got a syringe from a feed store and cut the tip to fit the plastic bleed tube. And hayes do have different models. Don't really know how to tell the difference. As far as I know they all bleed the same. |
| Sounds like you're low on brake fluid.... | Tom Collins Nov 15, 2002 10:40 PM | | Do as MCShawn said and get a big syringe. It makes filling the brake with fluid MUCH easier.
Don't put too too much in; if there's too much fluid in the brake, the pistons (and thus the pads) won't retract far enough and will rub the rotor. |

First off, I apparently have what Hayes is calling HFX-9, I think, which is slightly different than the other brakes they have. The bleed procedure is different (bike needs to be level, you pump the handle during, etc...). We tried the new procedure and the rear brakes are still wrong. I can say with confidence that there is NO air left in that system. If there is, there's a design defect because no way should you have to bleed 7 times, using almost 2 bottles of fluid to get this right...
Anyway, we'll be calling Hayes again, my suspicion is that the lever is broken in some way.
Thanks!
