Brakemeister - help please - burning through disc pads!!!(12 posts)

Brakemeister - help please - burning through disc pads!!!Ian (in London)
Nov 16, 2002 1:04 PM
I have posted before but wondered if anyone could help. The mud has arrived and I am getting about one ride, perhaps two out of a set of brand new EBC Gold pads!!! I have tried EBC Green, EBD Gold, stock shimano (I am running the M555 hydro - great power)and they are all about the same.

I am wondering if the principal reason is that the mud just has nowhere to go on this system as the disc is not at all drilled out. I am therefore considering gettin Hope to cut me some custom wavy and highly drilled out discs in the hope that this could help clear the pads....any thoughts?

I know that it depends on where you ride, but where I am, burning through pads at this rate, it's just getting silly expensive. This cannot be right, but I know that there can only be two causes, the pad material, and the disc. So....before I spend a small fortune on two new discs, anyone got any ideas?

Many thanks,

Ian

Ian,
You are using the stock rotors, right (RT60's)? The ones with very little holes in them? Ok, before you spend a fortune on new rotors, send me your mailing address and I'll send you a pair of RT75's (XT rotors) and try those. They will work just fine as they are drilled out and have a slightly smaller brake track(and give you the same effect as the wavy rotors). It's up to you if you want them (and you can hook me up later with some fibrax pads). Let me know as they are about to get packed.

Rob,

I have sent you an email, rather than post my address here!! Thanks in advance.

I will also try the Fibrax pads when I find some, but really think that the rotors will help a lot, not sure if the slightly reduced braking track will affect anything, as the pads will run on the spines a little too, but probably won't notice in practice.

Anyway, will give it a go for sure, if you are sure you are happy to mail them to me....that's much appreciated. Enclose your address and I will sort you out with something....

I think you are correct about the mud packing in the rotor holes and grinding away the pads.

Seems like wavy rotors might would make a big difference in the wet, pushing the mud away to the edges. Not so sure about more holes, they'd just hold more mud. There's a new wavy Magura rotor I saw recently that makes a lot of sence.

I dont know , whats the problem is. I think however that holes would exagerate the problem as mud ( sand ) will sit in the holes and slowly distribute.
Try to get some metal sintered pads, instead of organic pads. The mineral oil brakes ( shimano and magura) have problems with overheating when you use metal sintered pads ( as they conduct the heat better , than organic pads ) but when overheating is no problem, but padwear obviously is, than try to go metal sintered. They definitely lasts longer and usually work better when wet ( than organic pads )

I heard a lot of complaints with ebc pads, you might try different ones instead.
