Avid Discs squeal on first touch, then stop (2 posts)
| Avid Discs squeal on first touch, then stop | gedanken Nov 16, 2002 2:22 PM | | If I squeeze them hard they'll squeal, but on the second squeeze they don't, almost as if the rotor has been wiped clean. This is during dry weather on a paved road. But the squeal comes back a few minutes later. What's happening folks? Thanks in advance and postvance. |
| different for each rider/fork/frame | derby Nov 16, 2002 5:04 PM | | The Avid stock HPC pads and another high performance pad (EBC Gold)squeeks and squeeks for me. I've found that the EBC Green, a slightly lesser powerfull "organic" pad never squeels for me, even in the rain. But they wear a bit faster requiring more frequent adjustment. With these pads my rotors look cleaner, brighter, with no pad material build up which is what prevents squeel I think.
Squeeling is a harmonic vibration effect. Be sure the inside pads are kept adjusted close to the rotor for flat wear. And be sure your rotor bolts are torqued evenly and to spec. 26 in pounds I think, it says what the torque spec is on the rotor. Hack mechanics will usually over torque the bolts. Their may be tricks to dampen or tune the harmonics to be different. I've heard of using brass washers behind the rotor.
Good luck!
