| Anyone run a disc on the front wheel only? | AlphaDog Nov 17, 2002 8:07 PM | | Does it seem to work ok? I really think a disc on the rear is unneccesary. Besides, you don't want the rear to lock up anyway. |
| Not anymore, but did for 2 years... | næstep Nov 17, 2002 8:29 PM | | My wife still does due to lack of a frame mount.
After two years, I too felt that V's in the rear were up to the task for my riding style (I was perfectly happy with just the front disc), but I went full disc on my new bike due to the added advantages of lack of rim wear, and immunity to out of true wheels. Wet weather performance is another consideration, but I live in the mostly dry SF Bay area where that isn't a big concern.
Look around, and you'll see that there are a number of riders with this type of setup, and a handful of bike models that came set up this way from the factory.

| 2 years also. | troy Nov 18, 2002 2:50 PM | | Just bought a new frame so I went front and rear disc.
No problems with front only. I wouldn't say that a rear disc is unnecessary but a front only with rear v brake works great. |
| Yes.... | Roy Nov 19, 2002 7:37 AM | | I have that on my hardtail which doesn't have a disc tab for the rear. It works okay (XTR V) but I'd rather have a rear disc for a number of reasons. I have no desire to get one of those Hammerhead adapters, though, so I'll make do. |
| I did until last night.... | Shencycle Nov 19, 2002 8:31 AM | | when I put a Avid mech on the rear....I had been running disc only in the front (Hope Mini 185mm) and XTR V in the rear....for about 2 seasons......It worked fine for my style and riding area.....Although, when it gets wet and sloppy, the XTR just does not keep up.
That is when the disparity is the greatest. It was enough to cause me to switch out the rear brake.....it will still be cable actuated and not a hydro feel......but it will stay consistent in all conditions......if your in a very dry climate....the rim brake rear should feel fine.....good luck..... |
| Thanks | AlphaDog Nov 19, 2002 9:07 PM | | Thanks for the feedback. I may try this setup for awhile. My local trails really don't even require discs, until there wet. I had hydro discs on my old FS bike and liked them, but they required way to much maint to be worth the extra power. I'm thinking about Avids front and rear. Just trying to justify the wheel expense since my current wheels are holding up great.
Thanks again. |
