Mech Disc cable strength?(8 posts)

Mech Disc cable strength?PsyloRaceDH

Morning kids.
I noticed while working on my bike this weekend, it feels like I am going to snap/bend something in my rear Avid brake system.
I squeeze, the wheel locks up, but I can keep squeezing the lever. Is this just normal cable stretch? Or did I maybe route the housing (full length) wrong, and that extra play is just the housing moving?
I don't have problems braking....just that the extra play is...odd.
Ideas? Experience?
I am running a Avid SD2 lever, full length housing brake cable, and Avid 01 disc in the rear.
We don't like to talk about that here...næstep

But no, seriously, I know of two cases here of fellow riders "pre-stretching" their Avid Mech cables by squeezing the brake levers so hard they broke something inside the caliper. There are some mechanical innefficiencies in these calipers that just aren't present in a hydraulic system. Luckily, they don't present themselves in the course of normal riding.

My advice would be to accept the extra squeeze so long as your brakes are performing up to your standards.

No No, I love them. Cheap, easy to adjust, along with set up. I just love the ultimate feel and power of Hyrdo.
I'm sure the squshy lever feel doesn't help me.

The extra "pull" is housing compressing, not cable stretching. It won't make the brakes any less powerful (they will lock up before housing starts to compress), but if it bothers you, you can get flackjacket housing (FMJ's will probably be as good or better, but they won't do as good of a job keeping out the elements as full length flacks) which will not compress. It gives avid discs a much more crisp feel.
Oh... enjoy bleeding your Grimeca's!

There's kevlar housing by QBP or Jagwire that won't compress and you can run it full length (it's what I use). There are a number of compressionless housing choices available.
I'm bleeding more than my System 8's are!PsyloRaceDH

I figured, since I can see the housing move. Just wasn't sure. Also, I hate the routing the cable has (few more than soft bends), but it is the only good way. (02 Bullit)
Better housing? I will try that.
As for the bleeding. Hell, I only bleed them when I do an overhaul on them. And that is because I redo the fluid, which is of course, my own choice. Never had an ounce of problems with my Grimeca's!
(besides I should have gotten red)
