| Attention all Magura Cult members. | Mike T. Nov 18, 2002 7:04 AM | | Yesterday I sent out the latest and greatest MCM newsletter and the addresses below bounced back to me. If you want to send me your latest e-addy I must have your MCM name and number. I'll then get a copy of the newsletter to you. Thanks.
Also, if you didn't receive a newsletter it could be that I never had your e-addy to begin with or I lost it in a minor meltdown last year.
Here is a correction to the newsletter from Janne Heila in Finland -
"One thing I'll have to correct: We didn't have two teams at Lohja 24h event, the other event we went to was the MTB-Lohja organized Oktoberfest and after the ride there was the Magura's Finnish importer organized MCM-party."
Sorry Janne, my mistake! Whip me with a Maggiepipe eh? Oooh, ahhh. I see some of your Finn dudes are in there too.

| WHEW...so glad I didn't anger the muhgoorah gods...(question) | fireboy Nov 19, 2002 5:03 PM | | I have tried to update my email with cappy mike...but my presence here on the board has been lax...and for that I should be flogged..
puhhleeez????
Capt. Mike,
I am looking at possibly getting a True North. I want to be able to put 2.3s or 2.6s on it and still run my HS33's (gonna have hugh make me a freeride hardtail....yippeeeeee). What are the options to be able to run the maggies with such big sneakers???
Engr. Terry |
| The question should be.................... | Mike T. Nov 19, 2002 6:10 PM | | .....why would you want to use HS-33s and not disc brakes? There is not one thing that 33s do better than disc brakes.
I'm far form being any kind of expert on large tires and HS33s but I know a couple of Cult members that might know. I'll ee them on this.
I DO have your updated e-mail.
Mike T. (mcm # 717) |
| Ok yer answer is here. | Mike T. Nov 20, 2002 5:08 AM | | From my learned Magura buddy Pat T. -
Ok, 2.3's are no problem, 2.6's no way....unless someone can make a custom booster...but I am still not even sure it would fit between the slaves and let the slaves have enough travel for adaquate pad contact.
Anyways, to fit the 2.3's all ya gotta do is cut the inside hole off of the boosters. Now I did run Maxxis High Roller 2.5's with the 33's, but they were VERY tight with no mud clearance to speak of and no room on the sides, in fact on full compression off of a jump they did touch the slaves (wouldn't have anything to do with my 230lbs...LOL)
So there ya go.
Pat T. ® MCM #69
Changing the subject fireboy - we just got a new mini-pumper with a Snuffer CAFS unit (www.snuffer.com). Is it ever sweeeeeeet! Cappy eMTea.
Mike T. (mcm # 717) |
| I thought about going disc....but... | fireboy Nov 20, 2002 6:40 AM | | ..I have IRD dual banger discs on my joker...but I still just love my hs33's...not only do they have exquisite modulation, but they have sentimental value...bought from thor, painted by TRON with a sweet flame/hydrant paintjob...
OK..maybe I will brake down and try some maggie discs...we'll see..
PS...mini pumpers are cool!!!
wish we had one....ours are all Pierce big rigs....
stay safe cappy mike...and thanks for the info..
terry |
| Ahhhh.............. | Mike T. Nov 20, 2002 7:03 AM | | ......"sentimental value...bought from thor, painted by TRON with a sweet flame/hydrant paintjob..."
Yeah I'd forgotten about that, so those facts make a difference.
The Snuffer is buildable into any new truck - ours just happens to be in the arse end of a mini 4WD rescue/medical truck. |
| One thing I forgot to add though.................. | Pat T.® Nov 20, 2002 5:43 PM | | Not all tires are created equal, like my 2.5's were actually 2.35 on the rear rim and 2.37 on the front rim. So if you can, measure your tires of choice first, and make a note of the rim that is was on. A narrower rim will round the profile of the tire and a wider rim will give the tire a more square profile. The tallest tire I ever used was a Geax Blade 2.25, they were fricken tall....barely fit under the booster, in fact I had to trim the little nubs off cause the noise was driving me crazy (like 50 cards in the spokes...LOL). Anyways...just more FYI |
| thanks Pat... | fireboy Nov 25, 2002 7:42 AM | | ...I ordered some Gazzaloddi 2.3's for my joker...I will try them out on the ProCaliber with the maggies...just to make sure they fit..before ordering tires for the new rig...
=]

| Oh dear, I'm no longer on the list. Here is the info.... | Rev Bubba Nov 21, 2002 7:29 AM | | Bob Veit, MCM # 147 (I think).
My email address is Srfingusa@aol.com
A quick question. What is the weight of the Marta SL (complete system of course)
It just might be time to replace the HS33's and I already have a set of disc wheels ready to go.
Thanks |
| Ok Rev................ | Mike T. Nov 21, 2002 8:06 AM | | ......I gotcha new info. I've been busy sending out individual newsletters to those who (sniff) chose not to keep me updated (sob) with their new addys (bawl). That's ok; I'll get over it (sniff again).
Magura advertises their SL at 324g per brake. I'm sure someone has weighed a set and will post their findings.
The last year's Marta has been a fine brake for me and I'd expect no less from the SL.
Mike T. (mcm # 717) |
| Thanks. Now, what was the weight you had for the HS33's | Rev Bubba Nov 21, 2002 8:54 AM | | The usual suspects, levers, brakes, tubing, etc. I know it is somewhere.
Apprecialte it
MCM # 147 |
| Seeing as............... | Mike T. Nov 21, 2002 9:06 AM | | .....we're comapring apples to apples here is the factory claimed weight for HS-33.
790g without boosters.
From my Cult site are booster weights (each, weighed by me) -
Alloy - 26g
Carbon Fiber (Liken made) - 34g
Ti (Moonlighter made**) - 39g **no longer made :o(
Steel (Magura standard) - 49g |
| Thanks, quite a reduction in weight from rim to disc.... | Rev Bubba Nov 21, 2002 10:14 AM | | Let's see, total for the HS33's with boosters is 888 less 648 for the Marta SL saves me 240 grams which is somewhere around 8.4 oz. Hmmmm. Disc wheel sets are not that much more than what I presently run so I may even come out a bit less after all is said in done.
Thanks
REV (MCM # 147) |
| I think..................... | Mike T. Nov 21, 2002 10:52 AM | | .....my DT-Swiss 240 disc hubs are 111g more than their non-disc version. I dunno 'bout others.
All depending on your opinion though, the weight is not an issue especially if the disc setup is more than a rim setup as disc offer so many more advantages Rev. It's rare we hear of someone switching back. Once you ride with them for a while any remote thoughts of whether you did the right thing are history.
I live in a flat part of the world and if anyone doesn't *need* disc brakes it's me. I thought I'd try discs for a while and then switch back to my beloved HS-33s. Errr I sold my 33s long ago. 'Nuff said.
Discs are there when you DO *need* them with no penalties for the other times.
Mike T. (mcm # 717) |
| I have Avids on my FS but I do like the feel of Hydro... | Rev Bubba Nov 21, 2002 12:13 PM | | Do they really stop any better? Probably not but they do feel smoother. The HS33's just feel nicer and they may end up on my Frankenbike/adult trials/road bike.
Thanks again for your information.
REV #147 |
| Oh sorry Rev................. | Mike T. Nov 21, 2002 12:42 PM | | .....I wasn't aware that you were a disc brake user. I'm preachin' to the choir then.
I used Avid for a few weeks in the spring and while they're a powerful brake (probably more so than anything I've tested) the Marta (I can't vouch for the SL) are smoooother, have smoother modulation, are waaaaaay lighter and to me juss plain "feel" better but there is no measurement for that.
For out & out power the Avid is a great brake but for more "sophistication", if total power is not a necessity, I'll go with Marta every time.
Mike T. (mcm # 717) |
| I think the Marta SL is the perfect choice for an XC HT | Rev Bubba Nov 22, 2002 4:52 AM | | This is not the bike I use at ski areas nor for any attempts at freeriding, just the one I ride most of the time and even attempt to race now and than.
I do appreciate the feel of hydro, have always had good experience with my HS33's (put them on three or four years ago and have never done anything with them except transfer 'em to the IF from the Zaskar) and now do not have to worry about any weight penalities.
Probable future changes will be a new set of Mavic UST wheels built up around Chris King hubs. These will make up for any weight I gained by going with the WTB Laser/XT disc wheels that I presently own. |
