| getting avids.. do i REALLY need FMJs? | jasonb_xc Nov 18, 2002 8:08 PM | | i see that avid recommends them and i've seen others recommend replacing the cables as well. is this necessary or can it wait a while? my cables are the standard that came on the bike, but its basically brand new. thanks! |
| Well, yes, you need new cables, but... | næstep Nov 18, 2002 9:07 PM | | ...Full Metal Jackets or any other primo cables are not required.
While the cables you have now are nearly new, they're too short for the discs (assuming you're upgrading from V brakes). Well... you can use the rear brake cable in the front, but you'll still need the housing.

| That, and ·························· | Spar¡cus Nov 18, 2002 9:21 PM | | .lever pull will be easier and stay smoother much longer if you run full length housing front & rear.
I have multiple bikes set up with a total of eight Avid mech disc calipers. Not one of them has anything but "buy-by-the-foot" standard brake housing. As long as it is plastic lined, it works fine. But do spring for the better cables, rolled or preferably teflon coated. The smoother the cable, the easier it slides within the housing.
When using plastic lined housing, don't use petolium based lubricants, which will eat plastic. Go bare or spray some silicone into the housing before threading the cable. Of course use metal housing ends, too.
If you do all this plus take care in cutting the housing ends square and make sure they are free of snags & burrs, you won't believe how easy and smooth a pull on the lever will feel.
