Avid mech., Hayes hydro, Sram 9.0mountaincruiser

I am looking to upgrading to disc brakes. I don't mind v-brakes, but i was wanting something a little more powerful. Basically I want better than v-braking with out spending too much. Are hydros worth the cash? i am in the midwest, and cross country race. i travel pretty often to more mountainous areas. i am only putting the disc up front for now. i will eventually upgrade both. I hear really good things about the Avid Mechanicals, and about the Hayes Hydros.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. thanks.
