Formula B4 PRO ???(12 posts)

Formula B4 PRO ???Azero
Nov 21, 2002 2:17 AM
Is anybody know the news Formula B4 PRO ?
The diameter of the piston is 18mm instead of 16mm for B4 classic, (so 25% bigger!)
They are cheaper than Magura Marta (in France!) and the weight is similar.
I practice XC in mountain with a SPE FSR XC M4, and I weight 80kg. do you think it is a good deal ?

sure it will work fine for you... Actually its lighter than the martha,
and with the 15 % more power ( 25 is a little too much for me ) the pro has all the power you ever need.....

Plus it doesnt pump up ( lever actuation point stays the same, even if pulled fast repeatedly )

Of course you have to take my opinion with a grain of salt, as I sell Formula brakes... :-)

B4 Pro or 4racing???Azero

ok, thank you for your reply,
I think you know very well Formula brake!, so do you think B4pro are really enough for me???, or must I buy 4racing ??
my bike weight nearly 11.4kg.
ok.. I don't want a heavy bike... but I prefer have very good brakes, good power, good durability, and loose 100 or 150gr if necessary!!! (but... if necessary only!! ;-) )
I am not racer but I ride in mountain, with sometime long ride (80 or 100km) and often more than –1000m in one time (nearly non stop)!!!
I think B4 classic are probably not suitable in this case!!!, but are B4 pro really better for this???
My actual brakes are VB Avid Arch50 and my fork Duke Race (on FSR XC M4).
I have to decide between B4pro and 4racing!!!!
Thank you for your help!

...just installed a set of the 2003 Magura Marta's a few weeks ago. These are the black anodized Marta's with the wavy rotor. Weighed them on my digital scale, 700 grams complete for the front and rear with all mounting hardware and uncut lines.

On weight weenies site:
Marta 2002 Front: 397gr and Rear: 413gr
But it seems a lot!, strange!!!
A friend has just weighted them 710grams for a complete set!!! it's in accordance with you!!!

Good power, for sure!!!
But Marta is so expensive!!! :/
I don't know!!! :/
I dunno.................Mike T.

.......where they got those 2002 Marta figures but I weighed 'em myself at this -

Front - 368
Rear - 379
Total - 747
Uncut lines.
One difference between 2002 and 2003 Marta's...AndyH

...is the inclusion of the "wavy" rotor which weighs less than the "conventional" rotor. Still wouldn't account for the "heavy" weights listed on weight weenies site.

Here's the info that I documented for myself during my upgrade from Shimano XT disc brakes to a set of 2003 Magura Marta's:

Shimano XT Front (complete): 449 grams
Shimano XT Rear (complete): 468 grams
Total: 917 grams

2003 Magura Marta Front (complete): 342 grams
2003 Magura Marta Rear (complete): 358 grams
Total: 700 grams

Weight Savings: 217 grams (.4785 lbs.)

Shimano XT Rotor: 122 grams
2003 Magura Marta "Wavy" Rotor: 104 grams

Notes:
1) Magura weights were taken with uncut hoses.
2) "Complete" weight includes caliper, rotor, levers, hoses, pads & all hardware needed to mount brakes to bike.
3) Shimano weights were taken with 800 mm (front) & 1400 mm (rear) hoses.
Is B4 Pro a serious competitor for Marta ?...Azero

thanks for your interesting reply!
for sure, Marta 2003 is a very good brake!
do you have Marta or Marta SL ?
wavy rotor is provide only with Marta SL, no?

in Europe, one of the best price(in a serious shop!) seems to be in Belgium.
B4pro 03 =169 Euro,
B4SL 03 =210 Euro
Marta 03 =239 Euro,
Marta Sl 03 =299 Euro

Formula seems to have solved some problems on B4 for 2003:
New lever is stronger, (new design), right?
power is bigger (diameter of piston is bigger), really better?
problem of temperature is solved ? with new machining calliper ?, right?
weight is still very good.
price is so nice!

Are B4 Pro or B4 SL 2003 serious competitors for Marta 03 ?
What about durability? Power?
A few answers...AndyH

I have the 2003 Marta (not the SL's) which for 2003 are anodized black (instead of the 2002 silver) and come with the same wavy rotor as the Marta SL's.

I have no experience with any Formula disc brakes, so I don't want to comment other than to say that they seem like nice brakes which have been improved and "beefed up" for 2003. Price is very good as well.
Thank you !!!Azero
