| 205's more prone to damage? | RP Nov 21, 2002 1:49 PM | | Planning the build for a 7" travel play bike that will do the occasional ski lift DHing but mostly FR stuff. Question is are larger rotors more damage prone? For the last year I've been running 165 rotors on my trail bike. I've toasted a 44T chainring, a XT rear derailleur, a pair of 535 pedals and the paint on my Fox Forx, but haven't hurt either rotor. I know everyone automatically thinks a 205 rotor is the easy call, but I've only experienced fade on lift runs with the 165 rotor a couple of times, so I figure 185 rotors might be plenty of power with a smaller profile. Any insights? |

I have not taken any damage, but I have heard rocks bounce up and clang off the 203 rotors, which I never heard on the 165s. I don't think there's too much chance of trashing a rotor unless you crash, and that would potentially bend any size rotor.
If you're talking Avid rotors, the 203 rotor is thicker than the smaller ones, so it's a reasonable increase in weight over the 185.
