Hayes lever(2 posts)

Hayes leverflydoc

My brother has a Trek 8900 with Hayes disc brakes. He took a nasty spill and the front lever is extended forward and it looks like the brake piston is pulled out at the lever. Oddly enough, the brakes still seem to work, though I cannot say how well. Does anyone know how to rpair this?

Thanks

Is it a Hayes 00-02 Mag,03 HFX-Mag or 98-99/DH? I haven't worked on the 2003 HFX-9.
It sounds like the piston push rod has pulled out of the piston. The push rod is ball shaped and snaps into the piston. Maybe you can pop the push rod back in, but sometimes when you crash the push rod retaining tabs can break and not hold the push rod in place. You can buy a new piston or the whole master cylinder assembly.
