| anyone try hayes levers/03' XTR calipers w.mineral oil? | rideit... Mar 21, 2003 11:09 AM | | Please let me know how the experiment went. I will try this today, will post followup. |
| make sure we............. | heff® Mar 21, 2003 1:00 PM | | .....know what hospital room to send the flowers to.
You CANNOT use Hayes levers with Shimano brakes, period. Aside from the fact that piston diameters are considerably different, mineral oil will destroy the seals in your Hayes levers. Vice versa if you try to use DOT fluid in your XTR brakes.
I can tell you what your eperiment will result in. Best case scenario, you'll have toasted Hayes levers. Next worse, any DOT fluid remaining in the seals, piston, and resevoir will quicly destroy the seals in your rather expensive XTR calipers, and void the warranty completely.
Worst case, you'll get halfway down your favorite downhill, and the brakes will fail completely, and you'll stop by running into a very large tree.
DO NOT DO THIS!!!

| sure........ | Brakemeister Mar 21, 2003 1:28 PM | | sure go ahead.... when and IF you awake in the hospital I have a nice set of Formula brakes for you, because you can throw the other parts away ...
Mineral oil and brakefluid doesnt mix.. I mean the seals will swell and deteriate, dissapear, break and stuff. And that goes both ways, mineral oil seals are different than dot seals .
Plus the unequal size of pistons will make a interesting brake for the short time it will hold together...
:-)
DONT DO IT

| Go for it.................. | Mike T. Mar 21, 2003 5:38 PM | | ....!! You might be the one who proves Darwin's natural selecton is bunk. |
| Don't listen to them..... | Pat T.® Mar 21, 2003 6:31 PM | | And you will end up a hood ornament or maybe a real life tree hugger. You are playing with fire......do not do it......unless you have good medical, and money to throw away. |
| Yebbutt......... | Mike T. Mar 21, 2003 9:07 PM | | ....do we actually know anyone who's done this and buggerd up their brakes? Nooo! Maybe it's just scare tactics from the brake and oil makers. I say go for it Rideit! Sometimes pioneers make it big. |
| you could be right........ | heff® Mar 22, 2003 2:34 AM | | ...but then again, the Donner party were pioneers. Guess they did ok and all. Pass the drumsticks, please? |
| He said he'd post a follow up | Sparty Mar 22, 2003 6:53 AM | | If we don't see one within the next few days we'll know he didn't make it.
Can't wait to see the video.
Now back to you...

| It it works, it'll suck. | Dougal Mar 22, 2003 3:02 PM | | I know for sure that DOT fluid eats mineral oil seals, but I'm not sure if mineral oil will eat DOT fluid seals.
But even if the fluid doesn't eat it's way out, the brake system you're about to make will generally suck.
They hayes have big pistons and run at a lower pressure (I think 2MPa max). Using hayes levers with small slave pistons like the shimano and you'll have a really firm lever with absolutely no power.
Kind of like cantilever brakes with a V brake lever.
Basically you're about to take two good brake systems and make a hairy pig. In mathematical terms, 2+2=1.

| If it sucks, it'll work. | Sparty Mar 23, 2003 5:59 PM | | That's what I always say, anyway.
Oops... we were talking bike brakes, weren't we.
Nevermind.
