So what's the deal? What is considered the lower to higher models in that order? HFX 9, HFX Mag, HFX DH (Purple)? I have no clue. The Hayes site doesn't explain jack. Like we all know shimano's order is LX, XT, XTR. Thanks if you can help out a one clueless fellow.

Higher
HFX Mag Plus XC
HFX Mag HD/XC
HFX 9 HD/XC
HMX-1 HD/XC
Lower

Would be my breakdown based on general consumer price and different options of each break. There is no more Purple, sorry. Been replced with the HFX Mag HD, so to speak.

In an easier to follow order.....

HMX is the mechanical model. HFX Mag is the original Hayes, standard 6" rotor. HFX DH is just what it says, although they did change the model number. Comes with an 8" rotor. HFX 9 is the newest model, 6" and 8" rotors, with a new "open back" caliper design, probably the first redesign of Hayes brakes in a decade.

Best thing to do with Hayes is decide how you ride, and how much power you need, then figure how much money you want to spend. Any of the Hayes brakes can run 8" rotors, it's more just a matter of polish as you get higher up in the range. The "purple" had a slightly beefier caliper, with more structural bracing, but I'm not sure where they've gone with it. Wasn't really necessary.
