Is it normal for my Martas to a make a scraping sound....Shylock

...when I apply the brakes? If not, is this a simple centering issue?

Thanks

Are these your first disc brakes?AndyH

Disc brakes can make more noise (scraping, etc.) than v-brakes or cantilever brakes. My XT discs were pretty noisy compared to my '03 Marta's (I think it was due to the pad compound on the XT's). With that said, my Marta's are really quite with barely any noise at all.

I'd say that a scraping sound while braking is normal. If they were scraping when you aren't applying the brakes, then you have a centering issue.
They sure are....Shylock

.... I'm going to take my bike in to have the gnannomat surgery performed just in case. I generally only get this scraping sound in hard braking situations. Sometimes I get some chatter. Squeal occurs in super steep stuff under extreme braking loads. regular braking (speed controlling) has been wonderfully quiet and well modulated.

Might it get better after a little more riding time? I probably only have 9 hours on the brakes thanks to that lovely flu.

That's probably normal.fonseca

If you only get squeal in hard braking situations and under heavy load, you are simply pushing the limits of the brakes to their extreme. Those are light xc brakes after all. I bet that scraping sound is just the pad, too. I have used pads that made a distinct grinding noise under hard braking, so it's probably the compound.
I get it sometimes...Jaybo

when I first ride the bike after it has sat...like at the top of a climb. When I first begin to descend, I get this scraping noise, that is very irritating. It stops after 30 yards or so. Once warm, I find these brakes are pretty quiet. I like my Marta's but find the centering to be a bit of a pain. I still maintain the shim system sucks! I got some rusty stuff on my pads that I took off with some sand paper. It was causing some noise. Also, I used rubbing alcohol to make sure no grease is on the pads. Just some ideas.
