XT Lever Modification(3 posts)

XT Lever ModificationJackass
Mar 25, 2003 1:27 PM
Alright, so i was online, and saw some XT levers on ebay. Not thinking much about it i put in a bid on them for $5, and ended up winning them unexpectedly.

So now i have a set of XT levers for canti-brakes...
Is there any way to modify the pulling point on it to work w/ Avid Mech Discs?

Can i just move the point where the cable attatches to the lever itself outwards and thus get more pull outta them? Any other options?

Thanks

If not, just order the road lever compatible avids, the lever pull of mountain canti brake levers is nearly the same as road levers. Using your canti brake levers with v-brake lever compatible avids will give you a very mushy feel and way too much leverage. The lever will probably engage the pads at some point close to the handlebars and moving the pads closer to the rotor to compensate for this and lessen the lever throw will likely give you pad rub. If you already have the v-compatible brakes, you can try
travel agents
(one of those leverage adjusting pulleys for v-brakes and canti brake levers). You might have to get creative, maybe run the travel agents right at the levers (which would give you a 90 degree bend from the levers, might actually make things cleaner for cable routing). I'm guessing you already have a set of Avids, so this option is probably the best way to go.

Thanks for your suggestion, i'll look into it.

Yeah...i already have the brakes, and i just wanted to change the levers a little. The ones on there are 2 in1 canti and v brake levers, and the adjustment that changes b/t type of brake is simply where the cable mounts to the lever itself, so i had hoped someone else had simply changed the mounting point or something.
