| Hope Minis Leaking? | hopesmantoby Mar 25, 2003 5:40 PM | | I just got my set of Hope Minis in the mail. I noticed when I opened the package that the calipers were a bit wet with what looked like a clear oil. Its not alot but it is my first experience with hydraulics and do not know what to make of it. Wondering if anyone else has had this problem and if its leaking fluid or if its just condensation. Also I have just purchased a Manitou Skareb that should be coming soon. Do I need an adaptor and 185 rotor with a #5 caliper for it to work. Thanks. |
| re: Hope Minis Leaking? | Mac in the UK Mar 26, 2003 12:26 AM | | I ordered my minis on line and when they came they had a bit of clear fluid on the back of the pads. It turned out to be the silicone seal lube that hope uses. Hope says a bit there is normal. If the calipers are covered however that sounds like something else. Give hope a call if you're unsure. I've called them several times and always got good answers from the person who answered the phone (no waiting on hold).
As for the Manitou fork, it will likely use a Hayes mount (74mm) rather than an IS. Hope makes a front caliper for the 165mm rotor that does not require an adapter. Check with them on the 185mm or try their website (www.hopetech.com).
A couple of tips on installing the minis that I learned the hardway. First, don't assume your mounts are square, have them faced by a good shop. Even a little paint can make a big difference. Here in the UK it costs about 5 pounds a wheel and, in my opinion is well worth it. Once the mounts are square centre the calipers carefully and check the pads periodically to sure they are wearing evenly. Next, I've used both the organic and sintered metal pads and decided organic are for me. They are far quieter than the sintered metal and while they wear faster it seems a small price to pay for the lack of squealing!
Lastly, I suggest you contact Hope anytime you have a technical question about their product. You'll get a fast accurate answer from them (I've even called Hope USA after hours here). Good luck. |
