Help, need new brake advice.AsahiToro

I have a '95 Giant CFM 4 that I want to put a pair of '02 Rockshox Judy SL's on. The bike came with cantilever brakes(Shimano STX) on the original rigid forks and the Judy SL forks are made for disc or V brakes. What V brakes can I get that will also fit for the back? Will I need to modify the frame any to make V brakes fit in the back or will any work? I was looking at the SRAM 9.0 brakes/levers. If I skip the V brakes for now, is there any way to use the existing STX cantilever brakes with the Judy SL's? Thanks for any advice,

Scott

The brake studs will fit either kind. But modern frames/forks don't have the housing stop for Cantis. If you have the type where it's built into the stem, you shoudl be set... as long as your stem is 1 1/8". If it's not, it's probably a good idea to at least look into Vs. You'll need new levers, since the cable pull is different on the two brake types, but it's not a difficult switchover.

The other thing you will need is a frame converter...a little collar that mounts on the crossbar just ahead of the seatpost. This holds one end of the cable houseing that leads to the new V's you're putting on (B/c the cantis jusr ran through a tube or something).
This little collar should be about ten bucks.
