Lever reach adjustment screw(3 posts)

Lever reach adjustment screwDave Reed

I've got Hayes hydraulic disk brakes on my bike which are great . But I have just noticed that the rear brake lever does not fully return properly like the front lever does. It makes no difference to the riding of the bike as the brake pads do retract, but not fully, so there is a slight rub, but nothing much.

Took it into my LBS and they reckoned it could be either the pistons dirty so need cleaning, or the reach adjustment screw is in too far. The latter they thought unlikely as the brakes are pretty new. Have cleaned the rear brake and it made no difference.

Unfortunately due to the lever reach adjustment screws rattling outwards I have 'secured' them with threadlock which is a common thing to do apparently. However I have now rounded off the screw (allen key type) trying to 'break' the threadlock so that I can undo the screw . I have tried to take apart the lever, but once I have undone the bolts, the lever refuses to come out as it is still attached to the screw . Anyone got any ideas?

If not I will have to take it back into my LBS to see if they can help.

Try checking out one of the manuals on their site http://www.hayesdiscbrake.com/tech.cfm , you should be able to find one that can help you. Good luck.

If this is a Hayes 00-02 Mag or 03 HFX-Mag brake you can buy a new push-rod to fix your stripped out allen. It sounds like you have a HFX-9 or HFX-Comp because you talk about removing the bolt (lever pivot bolt?) the other brakes have a pressed in pin for the lever pivot. You may have to remove the master cylinder cartridge so you can rotate the lever off of the stripped out adjustment screw. Here is a link to Hayes on how to work on your brakes http://www.hayesdiscbrake.com/tech.cfm
