| Potential hazards of buying a 2year old front Hayes hydro? | Hogmeister Mar 27, 2003 11:22 AM | | I can get a pretty cheap deal (cca. 50$) on a front Hayes (two year old, 6" rotor). Are there any things that I should be aware of? What are the possible bugs of an old Hayes hydro? I'm kinda suspicious because of the low price... |
| I sold a set of 2 yr old Hayes hydros... | Sparty Mar 27, 2003 12:25 PM | | One of the pistons was siezed. The buyer was an acquaintence of mine; of course I told him about the brake's condition up front. I'd used the brakes hard year 'round for two years including through a couple of wet and muddy Oregon winters. I don't believe that it takes much effort to "unsieze" a Hayes piston. Anyway, I wanted to switch to Avids any this fellow had a set of Avid discs that he wanted to swap for Hayes Hydros, so we traded straight across. I didn't hear back from him about any problems repairing the piston (I asked him to let me know if he encountered any problems), so I believe we both walked away feeling like we got a good deal.
Anyway, evidently a siezed piston is one thing that can happen.

The lever could be bent or a crack in the lever housing or damaged master cylinder from crashes. You can buy replacement parts if anything is broken.
