XTR disc brake pad squeel(5 posts)

XTR disc brake pad squeelSam777

Have been riding the 2003 XTR disc brakes for about 3 months now in the Pacific North"wet". Great when dry - but every time they get wet (every 5 minutes up here) they squeel louder than any brake I've ever seen when the brake is applied. I keep 'em engaged for a while trying to dry them out - but that is going to wear them out, heat them up and besides - I shouldn't have to do that!!

I am using resin pads because they are supposed to be quieter. Before I go out and buy the XTR metallic replacement pads - does anyone recommend a pad that doesn't squeel with these brakes?

I am really more concerned about scaring the s--t out of the local granola hiking crowd and annoying my riding buddies than about modulation, etc...

By the way, I really like everything about the brakes - except the screeching which can be heard a mile away. If I can't get rid of the screech - I'll go back to my XT discs.

Thanks,
Sam

BTW....Yes, I've read & tried the suggestions of the previous post - thanks. Just want to know what the best pad is to get rid of the wet weather squeel... thanks in advance. Sam

The problem isn't just your pads or brake system for sure. On my bike for instance they don't squeal, not even in the wet. All I can suggest is to check the post by Mike T below.

I'd try the XTR metallic pads....AndyH

...I hear they come with the XTR disc brakes along with the resin pads. Did you buy your XTR disc brakes aftermarket, or did they come installed on your bike?

AFAIK, there aren't any aftermarket pads available for the XTR disc brakes yet.
