First Disc Set-Up - Spoke Question(5 posts)

First Disc Set-Up - Spoke QuestionMTBDad

I am thinking about putting a disc on the front of my bike. If I do that, I have to get a new wheel and am unsure about what most people recommend for spokes. I am currently using non Disc 3.1's with Sapim CX-Ray spokes. The sapims are a bit spendy and I may go with something less expensive. Is it asking for trouble to use Rev's?? I gather that most use Brass nipples rather than alloy. How comon is the front only set-up becoming?? (I did look at the FAQ's) - Thanx

I have CX-Rays on my disc setup and love them. But yes they are expensive. But my whole bike is expensive so they fit in well.

I've never used them but I'm sure others have and I'll bet they find they do a good job. I can't remember hearing around here that a wheel failed because of them. I wouldn't use them myself though.

I'll bet that's a very safe assumtion. Many of us here use aluminum nipples with zero problems though. They've been fine for my 185lbs for 18 months or so.

How common is the front only set-up becoming?

I don't imagine it's becoming common. For some people it's the only way to go as they have no frame tabs and don't want the weight and expense of an adaptor. I doubt very many people make a conscious decision to go with just a front disc. If they did it would make about as much sense as choosing a knobby 2.3 front tire and a 1" rear slick. If you have no choice then one disc (front) is better than no disc but it's not as good as two.

I got a front disc, rear V setup. My previous frame didn't have disc tabs, so unless I wanted to drop $200 on a disc adaptor, I was stuck with Vs in the rear.

The setup works well. They say 70% of your braking power is up front anyway, so this setup makes sense. I had no issues with the rear feeling anemic, cause I could lock it up easily anyway, even with my weight all the way back.

Now that I got a new frame with brake tabs (all the parts got moved over) I will be shopping for a new front disc (185mm Avid) and move the deore to the back with a new adaptor.

.....aware that your setup "works well". But think of all the good reasons for disc brakes. Not one of them applies to the rear of your bike. It's why I said "If you have no choice then one disc (front) is better than no disc but it's not as good as two."
Go with the Sapim Race....Roy

if you don't want to shell out the coin for the C-X Ray. They are comparable to the DT Swiss or Wheelsmith, but stronger. I've built 2 wheels with them and they are my spoke of choice; *and* an incredibly good deal through the Thor-man.
Of course if money were no object the C-X Ray would be my choice but I try to live within my means...
