Disc Break Upgrade (Hope er? Avid)(11 posts)

Disc Break Upgrade (Hope er? Avid)DJ Raven
Jul 22, 2003 7:03 PM
I currently have the origional Hayes HMX-1 mechanical disc breaks with a 6" rotar on my Hollowpoint Sport. I am looking into upgrading to a set of either the Hope M4 or the Avid Juicy 7 Extreme 185mm for both the font and rear. Any thoughts on whickh of the two is better? I ride fast and hard and use the breaks frequently for fast stops.
Tough to find a review of the Juicy 7's yet, since they.........Sparty

....aren't available. I rode a bike with J7's installed at Sea Otter but they weren't broken in. The "Speed Dial" worked well; as for the rest of it they felt just about like all the other hydraulic brakes on the market.

Personally I like my Avid mechs better.

Did I tell you that one of the gals that rides with the Disciples of Dirt cut a hydraulic hose in half on a crash in her Mt. Hood race last weekend?

So your Avid cable would have endured where the hydro failed?Scott P

are more durable than hydros.

I said I do not like any part that
i breaks.
My Avid Discs

great and they do not

easily.

If a part is known to fail
i (break)
often, I will not use it.
I wouldn't say hydro lines are prone to breaking....AndyH

...I've been running hydro brakes (Magura rim brakes, XT disc brakes, Magura Marta disc brakes) in one form or another for about 8 years now and I've never had any leaking or breakage issues with the lines, despite quite a few (I'm afraid to admit) pretty nasty spills. [knock-on-wood]
I think you guys are missing my whole pointshiggy©®™

Mr. believe-everything-I-find-on-the-web never once used the word
i BRAKE
in his posts. Not unusual to use the wrong word once but to always use it...?

The only breaks I want to see on a ride are when I stop to rest or when I ride away for a competitor.

or is it brake, or even braque, maybe it's braeke. :)

...is often construed as sarcasm or simply missed entirely. Too bad. In this particular case shiggy was just trying to point out the spelling challenges some people suffer when it comes to the words "brakes" and "breaks," albeit somewhat sarcastically.

Personally, I gave up on that effort long ago, when I realized I was trying to empty the ocean with a teaspoon.

Tuhday's yoot... seams lots ovum cain't spell woit nuttin'.

Don't get me started on internet shorthand...
