Are not all avid pads compatible?(4 posts)

Are not all avid pads compatible?NWO

My original avids are the old 165mm ones with magnetic pad holders. So I have extra brake pads for them My DH bike and my wifes bike have 03 avids with the stupid clips. I tried to use an old pad in the new avid and found that the pad material is just a little too wide to allow the spring to slip over. Do I have to bend it a little or are the pads not interchangeable. I noticed the new pads work for the old brakes. The reduced pad area must effect braking power and pad life though.

On a somewhat related note - I really don't know what was wrong with the magnets. My old brakes have seen lots of pounding locally and on some of the hardest trails in the world in B.C. and I have never lost a pad. I wouldn't mind a hayes style spring but what avid used seems like it will not let the full pad be used.

Yes, old pads won't work with clips, unless you file quite a bit of brakeing material away. Problem with magnets was that people would lose them all together and even if magnets stayed in place, they didn't do a very good job of retracting pads.
I have both styles as well and like clips much better. The trick is to file of the ends of the clips just a bit (the ends that curve into the rotor). That'll let you use as much of a pad as you would without the clips.
