New rotors and old brake pads(3 posts)

New rotors and old brake padsNRS Air Head

I finally got the rotors to go with my new '03 XTR wheels with the splined rotor mounts. I was wondering about using them with my avid brakes. Is it ok to run the old pads on the new rotors or do I need to get some new pads to break in on the rotors. Or should I just wait till I can get the XTR brake calipers with the shimano pads.

Thanks in advance

But you may not get full contact and full power and settled squeal characteristics for a few rides.

New pads are flat and will normally break in to a flat rotor surface with a few longer hard braking applications.

The width of the braking track on the XTR rotors is smaller...AndyH

...than your Avid rotors. As such, the Avid pads will likely not contact the rotors fully. They may hang a bit over on either side of the rotor. Probably not a huge deal, but I wanted you to be aware of it.
