So i have planned on buying the Avid Mechanical Disc Brakes for both the front and rear. But here is the thing...this is my first set of disk brakes and my first MTB and i'm not sure what size or type I need for for my bike. I have the Iron Horse Hollowpoint Sport 2003 and according to the specs it has a INTL Disc Brake Mount. What does this mean? It does not give a mounting size or anything and i see that these Avids are avail. in 203mm, 185mm...etc. which will fit? Is there a mounting bracket so i can get the 8" instead of the 6" or will the 8" already fit with the current config of the bike? Is there one specific setup that will give me max performance?

Which fork do you have on that bike? (Looks like the Manitou Black Sport is stock. Is that the one?)

What is your typical terrain and riding style like? (Do you live ijn a mountainous area and enjoy long climbs and descents? Do you plan to use chairlifts or shuttling and bomb downhill all day? Are you a flatlander with a few roots and rocks?)

These answers can help someone recommend a good configuration for your bike and style and describe the parts you need.

OK so i have some more info for everyone...I mainly ride downhill (despite the bike design). Thus being rugged terrain with 2 - 3' drops max, oh and frequent stops...The way i see it the bigger the disc the more area for grip and the cooler the it will be when using the brake. Am i wrong? And yes it does have the Manitou Black Sport but it is soon to be upgraded to the Manitou Black Comp. but we'll stick with the current specs for now. Do you need any more info? The bike specs are at:

.....above and it will answer most of your questions. Avid's site might answer the rest.

(to add to Mike T's excellent FAQ content:)

Please note that if you choose to go for the larger Avid disc rotors (185 or 203 mm, rather than the standard size 160mm), you will need to purchase a separate adapter/spacer/bracket thing to place the caliper at the correct distance from the fork leg.

Based upon your riding plans, I would go with the largest rotor you can fit, especially if those descents are fairly long. But especially make sure (call Iron Horse?) your rear triangle can handle the size rotor you want without having the rotor hit the stays.
