I hate these comparisons: XTR vrs. Marta?Jaybo

I rode some XTR disc's and love 'em. Do you think they are as good as the Marta's. I thought the XTR disc's were a bit smoother while the Marta's are a bit stronger. Does that sum it up?

Thanks,

Jaybo

There are two compounds for both brake systems. My big beef with the XTR is that you have to either go completely XTR (brakes, hubs, shifters) or piece a set together with XTR calipers, XT levers, ISO rotors to have them fit on standard ISO hubs and use sub-$300 shifters.

Marta works for me. She is so much nicer than the Avid. I just can't wait to get my rear disc wheel built up so I can get her on my rear too. Ride what you like though.
XTR's muy powerfulAK Chris

Running the XT/XTR combo and it is definitely among the strongest of the discs outside of the DH stuff. Have owned Hayes, XT, B4, B4 SL and Louise and ridden Marta briefly, I can't see them having any more stopping power than my setup. None of the others did either. The modulation with XTR is flat out awesome.

Nino posted some comparisons from a German MTB mag on the Weight board that had the XTR's as some of the most powerful discs. I did some heavy duty climbing today and took a long DH run, the XTR's stopped my 195# ass with ease with only one finger. I'm riding faster than ever before with total confidence in my brakes and my bike.
According to that article in the German MTB mag...AndyH

...the Marta SL's were more powerful wet & dry as compared to the XTR disc brakes.

Isn't the top chart...........Pat T.®

Isn't the top chart the cost in Euro's? Holy crap if so those XTR's are way spendy, I mean they do look sweet I have to admit, but if it is only mid range performance then why sepnd the extra coin?
Yup, that is cost in Euro's. However, I'm guessing that...AndyH

...the XTR disc price probably includes the cost of the dual-control (shifter/brake) levers. Subtract that cost and add in just an XT lever to get closer to the cost of just the disc brakes.
NOT! It's for the running costsMarty D

since XTR pads are (were?) more expensive and are fast wearing in wet. It says "how much does 1000 brakings cost".
hmmm..., that's not what the Shimano info sayslkfoster

A Shimano Europe chart I saw awhile back rated the XT disc as more powerful while the XTR is lighter.
Well, that is Shimano versus this "unbiased" source...AndyH

I have LOTS of time on both
XTRs with XT levers are very nice, I run them with one organic and one metallic pad
I run Martas on another bike, probably a tad more initial bite

man, they are both so good it's splitting hairs

tomorrow I am finally going to break down and install the 03 XTR shifter/lever setup on one of my bikes

I love the fact that the Martas come preaseembled whereas the XTRs are ala carte and I have to do it! (with aftermarket purchase)
arg

I actually get a good price on the 03 XTR shifter/lever with OEM purchase and they come pre assembled

both are I think the top brakes on the market
(caveat) I haven't spent any real time on the new B4SLs
both have enough power for me at 195 riding down steep stuff

We get GREAT support and pricing from Magura and that means a _LOT_ to me

The only way to improve on the XTRs:
havin a sensor attached to your sphyncter(sp?) the bigger the pucker, the better the braking!

One Zilla's opinion on the XTRs

I have the XTR/XT setup with 8" XT rotors in front and 6" in the rear. I use organic/semimetalic pad combos. They're very quiet, and plenty powerful. I understand the SM/SM setup is even more powerful.

I'm 215-220 lbs and can scrub big speed in very short distances with just one finger. Modulation is so amazingly proportional you'd think it was electronic. I have yet to hit a speed I can't eliminate as quickly as I want. It always feels like there is more brakeing power in reserve.

I never rode Maguras...I'd love to see how they could be much better.
