| Overkill | sdbullock Jul 28, 2003 3:45 PM | | I just installed some Avid 185s on my 'Jenson Chameleon', and I'm quite pleased with them. Initial thrashing on White Ranch's finest left me with little to wish for, and i would commend these to anyone presently considering making 'the switch'. These are significantly more powerful than anything I've ever tried (never saddled up on anything equipped with 8" DH-specific hydros or the like), and damned easy to modulate, too. I've got all the control i need in just one skinny finger (connected to a skinny 140 lbs of body). It's pretty easy NOT to lock up the wheels, but it takes conscious effort at times with all the power available to correctly modulate and keep both wheels turning. The brake-side of the qr did slip in the for a tiny bit after one sick descent, but this could also be chocked up to a not quite tight enough qr on a wheel that was violently piled into a bank. Who knows, but i'm not going to worry about it until i'm sure it's on behalf of huge freaking brakes.
Well, image upload seems to have failed, so more pics will have to wait... adios. |

| Pics | sdbullock Jul 28, 2003 3:54 PM | | these brakes will probably be swapped out for 6" rotors when this ride gets a permanent makeover as a singlespeed, but that is going to have to wait until i can buy new wheels and legs. |
| Lastly, in technicolor | sdbullock Jul 28, 2003 4:06 PM | | These brakes were a snap to install and set up. The directions are explicit and easy to follow, and matching them with SD7 levers afforded me with creepy amounts of adjustability (it will be a bit before they are adjusted perfectly, though i think the pads are bedded in already). Operation is dead silent, save for the 'i'm stopping you' zipppp sound at high speeds. (Does this sound like an ad, or what?) I also started with almost new cables (Flakjackets with full length sealing); Avid's Full Metal Jackets seemed like just a little too much (and 7" rotors isnt?), and a bit fragile or at least easily f**ked up. |
| Righteous Overkill | Sparty Jul 28, 2003 7:23 PM | | Nothing excessive about that bike IMO. You should see my '01 Sugar 1 with 5" Fox fork plus Avid mech discs (203mm rotor F, 185mm R). Every time I ponder it from my easy chair I wonder what I was thinking; every time I ride it I know it is set up just right.
Too much is not enough. Or as one of my ol' riding buds used to say, "The worse the better."
Nice green sled. Hey, didn't I see that over on the SS board a short while ago? Still looks great. What tires are those?
