Weight/performance of XTR/XT hydro combo and Hayes Mag Plus (x-post weight)...SS_MB-7

A teammate of mine is looking for some new hydraulic disc brakes. He's considering the XTR/XT combo and the new Hayes Mag Plus....despite my advise to go with Formula B4 SLs.

Does anybody have the actual weights of these systems + the required Hayes-to-IS adapters (25g/each?)? Hayes claims 368g/brake, but I've read otherwise.

Also, can anybody provide a performance, reliability and durability comparison between the two or relative to other major systems (B4s, Martas, etc.)

Lastly, can anyone provide the best on-line source and price for both systems?

Had Hayes on a Klein Palomino now going to XT/XTR. The Hayes were no end to trouble (yes, I have read every FAQ, Hayes manual and had them to the shop). They work but have little modulation (good power though) and are painful to keep quiet and prevent drag. I have bled them a number of times (using the bled kit is pretty painless, just takes some time), swapped padded (yes, both were the "quieter" semi-metallic ones), adjusted and re-adjusted the centering and still about every other ride they are dragging or making tons of noise, but the main complaint is lack of modulation.

My full XTR discs on the other had are completely quiet from day one, have had no work done to them (though I did safety wire the retaining pin instead of leaving the clip on, maybe 15 minutes of work) and have awesome modulation.

I have tried to like the Hayes but they just seem to be a lot of work for little gain in stopping power. If you bomb downhill and want great power them definitely give Hayes a look. If you do trail/XC riding I think the Shimano XTR discs might be better.

A few notes... Applications (e.g., bikes) seem to make a significant difference in brake performance, what works well in one case seems to work poorly in another. I am not sure why and I honestly think this is something component companies need to work hard on but it seems to be very true of disc brakes. The XTR's I currently have are full XTR (not XT levers) and they work great and I switching the other bike with Hayes (now) to XT/XTR next week (parts already on order). I really really tried to like the hayes but once I fixed one problem another occurred (just finished bleeding and re-centering the brakes again trying to fix sticky lever action that cropped up on the ride yesterday). Lastly, while I do not race downhill in this new age of disc brakes I have been riding and wrenching for 14 years and done a fair share of racing, the Hayes disc are definitely on the finicky side on any component I have worked on.

I have no info about the weight but weightweenies.com may have some info.

The earliest reports on XTR weights(mag, but info released from Shimano), indicated 557gm for the XTR disc brakes. This is , of course excluding levers, as you have your choice. XT hydraulic levers weigh 200gm, making total weight of the combo setup 757gm, or about 379gm per wheel. This is, of course with the XTR rotor, (139gm, vs the XT 126gm). I've yet to see anyone post weights on the lockrings, but as they're aluminum, I'm assuming they weigh less than six steel rotor bolts(usually at least 30-40gm). I'm guessing the XTR rotor setup is about 10-12gm lighter than the XT rotor setup merely because of the lockring.Unless you want XTR hubs, or the new DT 240 Centerlocks(sub 400 grams), the XTR rotors don't make much sense as they're much more expensive to replace.I estimated 10gm for the lockring because it looks larger than the 6gm 12-34 Ti cassette lockring to me, not sure though.
