| Just bought Avid 203mm BBDB and now I'm not sure... | BrandonAggsMntnBk Jan 3, 2004 12:08 PM | | I just ordered a set of 203mm BBDB after reading up on them in the review section and seeing people say to go bigger on the calipers. After I ordered them I was talking with my LBS and the tech. guy said they would be overkill for my type of riding, which is race/leiseure cross country. Do you guys think I should keep with the 203mm or swap for a set of 185mm BBDB? Thanks for the help.

| Still new? | f*nætik (aka næstep) Jan 3, 2004 12:49 PM | | Otherwise I'd suggest you ride them and find out for yourself.
But my situation is that I'm primarily an XC clyde with a good share of steep descents. I run 185 front / 165 rear on my two bikes. I picked the 185 up front because I was overheating the smaller rotors on longer descents other than the heat build up the 165's had enough power for me. But there's many a time I'm in slower, more technical situations where I hate the grabbiness of the 185 rotor and wish I still had the better modulating 165 installed. It's a compromise and something to get used to either way (including if you decide to stick with the 203's). |
| Still new? | BrandonAggsMntnBk Jan 3, 2004 2:39 PM | | I bought them brand new and they're still in the box right now b/c my new wheelset hasn't come in yet and I want them to be new so I can trade them in for the 185mm if I go that route.
The reason Im considering the downgrade is b/c I don't ride a lot of long downhill at all. It is mainly minor downhill and then right back up the otherside. |
| Some will undoubtedly disagree... | f*nætik (aka næstep) Jan 3, 2004 2:53 PM | | ...but I think you'd be happier with 185 or 185/160. |
| w/o long downhills | dbAbuser Jan 3, 2004 10:05 PM | | they probly are overkill. I'm 190 (or so) and really like the 203's for riding near Denver. I also don't notice much in the way of reduced modulation b/t the 203 and the 165. But it's just extra weight to carry around on the worst place if you're not gonna be stressing the 160 or 185's that much. |
| There's also the fork warranty issue... | Smytty Jan 4, 2004 5:03 PM | | Apparently, some manufacturers don't recommend using 8" rotors with a standard quick release - if you do, it voids the warranty. Personally, I would recommend 185 front, 160 rear. Once I get some more cash, that's what I'll be doing. Right now, I'm using 160's, and they're great for 90% of my riding. I'd like the 185 in front for the other 10%. |
