Hayes Hydro pistons breaking down(4 posts)

Hayes Hydro pistons breaking downWOY
Jan 4, 2004 3:23 AM
I was working on my friend's 02 Kona Bear Delux this afternoon and his front Hayes hydro has been rubbing. When I took the pads off I have noticed that the edge of pistons where they meet the brake pads are breaking down, kind of cracking and falling off. Has anyone had this experience? The material is really weak, it only takes very little force to break the edge of the pistons and the piston is not retracting and extending properly? Have anyone seen this before?

Yes the pistons can crack sometimes, they are made out of some type of ceramic heat-resistant material and are brittle. If the piston is cracked where the seal is, it will bind up or leak. Never use a sharp steel object to back the pistons back into the bores (I,m not saying you did this), use a 10mm box-end wrench or a plastic tire lever. They are inexpensve to replace http://www.balleracing.com/Hayes_Caliper_Piston.htm

I know what you mean by the 10m wrench since I have been running Hayes Hydro since 2000 and my set has been totally reliable I have deliberately faded both ends of my Hayes and once they cool down they are fine ( I am using Hope Minis at the moment). The particular mate's Kona (the orange hayes!) has been having problem with the Hayes since day one. They totally rebuilt the rear (it was leaking fluid through the pistons) and now the front is not retracting and I have found the edges to be breaking off and perhaps deformed.

Anyhow I will get back to you once he decides what to do.

Cheers
