Problem with XTR disc lever throw..(4 posts)

Problem with XTR disc lever throw..Lucky7
Jan 4, 2004 10:46 AM
Can't seem to get the lever throw close to equal on one of my bikes. Had my LBS look at them twice and he bled them both times. The rear one just has significantly more throw than the front befor making pad contact. Both have been adjusted in for my short fingers. And my other two bikes with XTR discs don't have this problem. Any other ideas?
You can adjust the throw by....SS_MB-7

Removing the rear wheel, pushing the pads/pistons back into the calipers and gently pulling the rear lever to partially extend the pistons/pads. Replace rear wheel and test for rotor/pad rub and lever throw. This essentially "resets" the pistons/pads to a new starting position and should be pretty close to the quick engaging front pistons/pads.

Will this keep happening though? Is this the dreaded "Sticky-piston Syndrome"? Thanks for the help.

Glad to hear it worked!

No, it shouldn't keep happening as long as you don't push the pistons/pads all the way back into the caliper. If you do, just reset them again.

No, this is not the dreaded "sticky piston" syndrome. I have that on my front XTR caliper. As the name implies, the sticky pistons don't fully return back into the caliper upon releasing the lever. This causes the rotor to rub the pads slightly since there is not enough clearance between the pads and rotor. This in turn creates a very firm front brake with minimal lever throw since the pistons are already partially extended. I've tried everything to remedy the sticky pistons, but haven't had any luck...they will be going back for warranty.
