Can you just buy an adapter and a 8" rotor to switch. Are the calipers the same?
It depends on what forkBalleRacing

Like a Rock Shox Psylo QR or Tullio axle can use either a 6" or a 8" rotor, but other forks like Fox do not recommend a 8" rotor on a quick release fork. "IS" 20mm thru-axle forks can use either 6" or 8" rotors, like a mountain cross racer would use a 6" rotor with the "IS" 20mm axle adapter 98-15282 and a downhill racer would use a 8" rotor with the "IS" 20mm axle adapter 98-15069. Most forks use the "IS" standard and the the caliper mount tabs have a different offset from the hub on QR and 20mm thru-alxe forks. On "IS" QR forks the caliper mount tabs are closer to the rotor so the adapter is thinner. On "IS" 20mm thru-axle forks the caliper mount tabs are farther from the rotor so the adapter is thicker, so on a QR fork like the Marzocchi JR-T you can't use the IS 8" 20mm thru-axle adapter 98-15069, you would use the Rock Shox 8" adapter 98-15604 because the Rock Shox 8" adapter is the same thickness as a "IS" 6" adapter 98-15068.
Here is the Hayes Mount Chart http://www.hayesdiscbrake.com/MountBracketChart2004.htm
And yes the calipers are the same for 6" or 8" rotors.
