| leaking caliper fixable? (XT-755/old style) | singleminded Jan 4, 2004 1:59 PM | | My rear XT caliper is leaking its mineral oil. I'm 99% sure it's coming from the pistons (on the side closest to the wheel). This is the old, two-piece caliper with four pistons. Is there a way to fix this at home, or is this a warranty deal only? I just got the brakes a few weeks ago from Jenson USA.

| warrantee it | steve3 Jan 4, 2004 2:13 PM | | at that age, you'd be better off sending out to be replaced by Jenson than fixing it.
Also, at that age (a few weeks), make sure Jenson covers the shipping. |
| get new piston seals, if that's whats wrong. (easy) here's how | wrenchmonkey Jan 8, 2004 7:39 PM | | inspect the brakes first to seee if it is just the seals. (don't lose the seal between the caliper halves)this may be damage also, so check it.
pull the caliper in two and get the pistons out - use a floor pump to get the pistons out, a piece of tube with a hole in it is great to make a seal over the little holes in the caliper halves.
then hold the pump head over the homemade seal and push hard on the pump to force the pistons out. watch out, they come out pretty fast.
check the pistons and the seals, the later of which will still be inside the caliper itself. if nothing looks damaged in the caliper itself, get some new seals (they probably come with new pistons). put a bit of grease on the seals (brake specific grease is best but expensive. put a bit of grease on the pistons as well and then push them back in.
reassemble the caliper, bleed it up, pads in, cross your fingers. |
