| New to discs: Hope Mono Mini or Avid Juicy 7? | dobbs Jan 4, 2004 6:39 PM | | Building up a new bike for general "trail riding" I guess they call it now. Live in the desert, weigh 210 lbs. Not a hucker or downhiller. I've narrowed my search to Hope Mono Minis or Avid Juicy 7s. What would you suggest? |

| My rotors blow, but the brakes are freaking cool. | Tscheezy Jan 5, 2004 12:21 AM | | Avid offered to send me two sets of round rotors in exchange for my set of wavys. That seemed awfully nice of them. I am giving the wavys one more chance with EBC Gold pads (whenever those arrive), but if that does not stop the squeal I will exchange the wavy rotors for a couple of sets of round. For desert (dry) riding, even the wavys would be great as long as you got smooth ones or took the sharp edges off.
The brakes themselves are very nice either way. I'm definitely happy with them. Just the rotors need help, imo. Compare that to the old Hopes, which NOTHING would shut up in the wet as far as I have heard. Then again, in the desert, who cares?

Even with something so seemingly simple as a rotor. What kind of problems were you having? Try giving the rotors a good cleaning with some warm soapy water (Dawn liquid) and a good rinse. Noise is almost always just a high frequency vibration and if you can isolate it, you can eliminate or minimize it. European metal products are ofent spayed with an anti rust agent (cosmolene is the one I'm familiar with) that needs to be thoroughly cleaned before use. The juicy calipers are made by formula, but formula doesn't make the rotors. Let me know if this helps.
