| Cantilever brake setup question... | eelpie Jan 5, 2004 8:26 AM | | Was setting up cantis (1st time) last night on my Cross Check and noticed that the front brake cable enters the headset cable stop at close to 90 degrees because the bottom of the stem is very close to the hanger. This causes the cable and housing to be bent at a severe angle by the bottom of the stem as the cable/housing enters the stop. This angle creates serious drag on the cable to the extent that the front brake does not retract once squeezed.
Is my stem simply too close to the hanger or can I twist the hanger to the left a bit and run the cable through it unobstructed (seems the hanger must be in the middle for proper caliper function)? Can't really raise the stem much, since I don't have the room on the steerer. Have several spacers between the hanger and stem, but apparently not enough to give me adequate room.
I'm thinking that I might need to get a stem with a 10 to 15 degree rise to give the cable housing more room to make the bend into the hanger.
If anyone has any close-up pix of a front canti setup, I'd appreciate you posting them. BTW, lever is aero, connected to Avid Shorty 6 caliper.

1) like you said, just twist the hanger a bit. That is a free solution to experiment with.
2) look around for different cable hangers. Some have much deeper drops than others, some have little noodles to make that sharp bend easier, etc.
3) cannondale used to sell a product called the "h-pipe", i believe, that was a bolt-on hanger to the fork crown. Doesn't give tons of room for your straddle hanger, but might be what you need to do.
Good luck,
