Shimano 475 or hayes m2 mechanicals?Don B

Does anyone have experience with these low end mechanical discs? I need a set and don't have much cash to spend. I need to know which one is better. The shimano 515-la is also an option.

Thank you,
Don

Thanks for your response Andy, but what I really want to know is if you or anyone you ride with has ridden properly set up Shimano or Hayes low end mechanical discs.

Rode and messed with them for almost a year. Tried every trick and tip available to get them to work well and they still stink. They squealed and didn't stop as well as v-brakes. I swapped in a set of Avid Mechs and the Avids are much better--no comparison in fact.

I'd have to agree w/ Mr. Dude. I am running a burly hardtail with an old Avid BBDB in the front and a Hayes in the back. I went with the Hayes to save some money. Bad idea. I should've spent the extra 10, 20 bucks on the Avid. The Hayes squeals like no other. The stopping power isn't that great either. It's more difficult to adjust the brake to your liking in terms of the contact point with the rotor and such.

If you're really strapped for cash, you might check out ebay. Sometimes people have front and rear sets of Avids for cheap. Or some online bike shop might have a package deal for brakes and wheels. Good luck
As I mentioned below, I've got perfect performance from HayesDanny

Mine worked just fine. I can see two differences from Avid.

1. No truing washers. This could be a big deal if your mounts aren't square.

2. Integrated pad adjuster on slave side only. Avid lets you adjust both pads. To me this isn't a big deal if you use some forethought. I set my lever adjusters all the way in so I can use them to compensate for wear. This is the same thing you do for rim brakes and probably the reason the Hayes set is slightly lighter.

Mine do not drag or squeal. Of course, I am very, very careful when installing the caliper. I make sure it is are square to the rotor.

I have had no problems with Hayes mechanicalsFett

I have had Avids, Hayes mechanicals, Formula Activas, Hayes Hydraulics, Magura Louise and every one of them works fine when adjusted properly. I will grant that the Avids are a little easier to setup than the Hayes mechanicals, but the Hayes stopping power is certainly acceptable.

and they work fine. Barely any dragging noticed and stops well. Bit heavy though but what do ya want for a mechanical disc that sells for about $40 per wheel.
