avid v-brake pads, just replace cartridge or entire assemblyhead

i'm running avid ti vees on my hardtail with sun zero degree xc rims. when it comes time to replace the pads should i replace just the cartridge part or the entire pad/post assembly? what pads do you recommend for east coast (bone dry to nasty slop and ice) conditions?

thanks,

Me, personally, I run solid block pads on one bike... the Koolstop dual compound. Great all around pad, and the solid block style is a little bit bigger as far as contact area, and has more grooves and such cut in it to help clear away water.

Another bike uses the cartridge setup. At first, this was cool, because it meant I could use ceramic specific pads. (ceramic rims are great in teh wet) Unfortunately, I realized too late that plain black rubber pads are better on ceramic rims... ugh.

Anyway, if you decide you want to experiment a little bit with pads, and try a variety, cartridge replacements are a little bit cheaper. And if you're dealing with mud or something else that tears up your pads on a regular basis, you may appreciate the ability to swap pads without having to align them every time... even though brake pad alignment really isnt' so difficult.

Unfortunately, different people like different pads, so there's no way for me to give you an easy recommendation. But start with the dual compound pads, they may suit you fine. Cartridges are fairly easy to deal with, solid block pads have mroe braking surface, that's the biggest difference I could find, other than that the block style is also a wee bit pricier.
